Nativity of Mary School Promotes Service for Our Community

Nativity of Mary School

Nativity of Mary School makes a strong impact in our local Independence community. Located at 40 Highway and Blue Ridge Boulevard at the southeastern end of Independence, our school looks to the Independence community for many service opportunities. The students are committed to one service project a month.  Community partners who benefit from their service include Comprehensive Mental Health Center, Mother’s Refuge. St. Mary’s Food Pantry, Sisters of St. Francis and the Fountains Nursing Home. The middle school has an elective of service for one quarter in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. These students recycle paper and cardboard, deliver gifts to shut-ins for Christmas and conduct a shoebox shower for patrons at Hope House.

In addition, at Nativity of Mary, we honor veterans during a Veterans Day program that includes a partnership with the Hickman Mills Jr. ROTC. The students sing songs, create greeting cards, recite the pledge of allegiance and honor the sacrifice of the veterans of Independence. This year they honored over forty veterans and their families. In the spring the school partners with Mother’s Refuge to sponsor a rummage sale of children’s items. Our Camp Fire Girls and Boy Scouts also conduct service projects in the local parish and in the community.

The impact that over three hundred Nativity of Mary students, from pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade, have in Independence is a tribute to the values that are taught in their curriculum. The students have high academic achievement goals, they represent our school in athletics and they are committed to serving in our community.

They empower students to grow to their fullest potential at Nativity of Mary School.
